The Langebaan Kiteboarding Guide

Flat water, consistent south-westerly winds, and a stunning lagoon backdrop โ€” Langebaan is one of the world's great kiteboarding destinations. Everything you need to know.

Langebaan Lagoon has been drawing kiteboarders from around the world for over two decades. The combination of reliable summer winds, flat warm water, and a beautiful setting makes it one of the premier flat-water kiteboarding venues in Africa โ€” and a serious contender on the global stage.

The Wind

The South Easter โ€” locally called the "Cape Doctor" โ€” is the dominant summer wind at Langebaan. From November through March, it blows consistently from the south-southwest at 15โ€“30 knots, with regular days exceeding 35 knots. The lagoon's orientation channels and accelerates this wind, creating ideal conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing.

Best Spots

Langebaan Beach (Main Beach)

The primary launch area. Sandy beach, easy water entry, good facilities nearby. Suits all levels. Busy in peak season โ€” give other riders space.

Club Mykonos

A protected bay with slightly lighter and more consistent wind. Popular with windsurfers and lighter-wind kite riders. Easy beach access.

Shark Bay

The southern section of the lagoon where our cam is based. More sheltered, popular with beginners learning to water-start. Rocky entry points โ€” take care.

Open Lagoon

For experienced riders, the open lagoon offers flat-water riding with plenty of space. Be aware of swimmers, kayakers, and other water users.

Schools and Lessons

Several IKO-certified kiteboarding schools operate at Langebaan, offering lessons for complete beginners through to advanced freestyle and wave riding. Most schools are based at Langebaan Beach and offer multi-day beginner packages. Equipment hire is available for experienced riders.

If you've never kited before, Langebaan is an excellent place to learn โ€” the flat water makes the learning curve significantly easier than ocean spots, and the wind is reliable enough that you won't waste lesson time waiting for conditions.

What to Bring

  • Kite sizes for Langebaan: typically 7โ€“9m for strong days, 9โ€“12m for moderate days
